Buyer, Beware!
There certainly is a HUGE selection of wedding services these days. This is particularly true when it comes to photography and videography. Variety can be great and competition drives the industry to continually get better. However, in a diluted market full of great professional photographers right down to amateurs that are unprepared for the immense responsibility of capturing somebodies wedding, the adage "buyer, beware" holds particularly true.
When you are booking a photographer (and I say this as a person concerned with the importance of having your day beautifully captured, not just as a photographer in the industry) be careful when you deal with any photographers that are offering noticeably, lower than standard rates. I would never accuse a photographer that has rates starting at $1100 dollars instead of $3500 of being incapable by any means. However, when you see prices like $800 for a full day of coverage I would be extra thorough in the interviewing process of that photographer. Plenty of "weekend warriors" and amateurs have talent but may be getting in over their head by taking on the challenge and honour of shooting a wedding. A photographer that is experienced and prepared for a wedding shoot knows exactly what their time is worth, the amount of work that goes into capturing a couples special day and the cost of maintaining and updating their equipment - which they spend a significant amount of money on.
So it is not to say that you can't get a good deal on your wedding photography, just that you should be aware of the potential pit-falls of a "budget photographer". Your wedding day goes by too quickly it seems at times and having the right photographer can certainly help you relive the beautiful memories. I'm glad I went with the photographer that shot my wedding and would gladly spend that money again.
